The July 5th Intrasquad meet was a huge success. Our Bullets’ swimmers did a great job and everyone had a blast. We hope that more of our swimmers take advantage of the other meets we have on our schedule. These meets provide all of our Springfield Bullets’ swimmers additional opportunities to swim in low pressure meets in Springfield (intrasquad meets) and in Decatur (Turbo Turtle meet August 14). We encourage all of our Springfield Bullets’ to swim in as many of these meets as they can. REMEMBER - Meets are in important component for your swimmer and for our team as a whole.

REMINDER - Stay Hydrated - Bring Water Bottles to Practice

It is always important for our swimmers to stay hydrated but I want to remind everyone of the urgent importance during the heat we are currently experiencing. All swimmers should be bringing water bottles to practice each day filled with cold water. Please put your name on the water bottle so it is easily identified by your swimmer. Also, no sharing of water between swimmers as we don’t want to share any potential sicknesses.

Summer Season to Continue Through August - Fall/Winter Starts Sept 11

The summer season will continue through the month of August and we hope everyone continues to practice with us during that time. Our current practice schedule using both Eisenhower and Nelson Center pools will continue through July 31st. After that time the practice schedule may change as our pool contract has us swimming exclusively at Eisenhower after that time (more specific practice times/locations will follow) We also have the End of Summer meet in Decatur on August 14th which we encourage all of our swimmers to participate in.

Families will continue to be billed their monthly training fees for the month of August. Any families choose not to continue practicing with us during the month of August will need to send an email to Kelly Capen, our team adiministrator, at k.capen@academybullets.com.

Our fall/winter season will begin the week of September 11 and we hope everyone continues to swim with the team this fall/winter. We are currently working on all details of our fall/winter season (practice schedules, meet schedules, parties etc) and will have those to our families in the next couple weeks. We have lots of exciting things planned and hope your family joins in on the fun!

Great Read / Video - The Habit of You by Tom Bilyeu

Here's an interesting thought:

By the time we reach 35 years of age, 95% of WHO WE ARE is a set of behaviours, emotional reactions, habits, attitudes, beliefs and perceptions that we've programmed into our subconscious mind. (Remember that number!)

Since most of our days look largely the same, and since our brains love to be efficient... We create 'programs' that help us live our lives in a way that feels familiar.

Nobody 'does this to us' - we create these programs ourselves, which is both a good and a bad thing...

Creating these 'programs' is good because you'd finish each day exhausted if you had to think about how to drive to work, where to get food from, or how to interact with the people you come in contact with...

And it's also bad because when it comes time for us to CHANGE and upgrade our patterns and routines, we have a whole program to rewrite.

5% of our thinking brain can declare that it wants to lose weight or learn a new skill...

But that 95% of who we are - our behaviours, habits and attitudes - can be heading in a totally different trajectory.

What do we do about that? That's something that Joe Dispenza shared on the Impact Theory show - which is my most-watched interview to date, with over 10 million views.

The title of our conversation was "Unlock The FULL Potential Of Your Mind" - and that's exactly what he explained how to do.

Here's your link to watch this legendary interview with Dr Joe - enjoy and be legendary.

New Swimmers Always Welcome - Invite Your Family and Friends to Join Our Team

Know anyone that might be interested in joining our Bullets’ family?  We accept new swimmers throughout the year and right now is a great time to join.  Please pass our information on to family and friends and have them fill out our new interested swimmer form HERE . Congratulations to Springfield Bullets Piper Langan, Adrienne Skelton and Griffin Gwaltney who qualified for and are swimming in the Illinois Swimming Regional Championships this weekend in Peoria. We are so proud of you and will be cheering for some awesome swims.

Piper, Adrienne and Griffin have worked very hard for this honor. The thing they all three have in common is their consistent practice attendance as well as the hard work they put in at each practice. Their hard work is definitely paying off for all three! Great Job!

Great Read - Six No-No Phrases for the Swimming Parent

From swimtelligence.blogspot.com

Parents often ask what to say to their swimmers to help them succeed. The conversations that happen between a parent and child can have a dramatic impact in shaping a swimmer's attitudes toward swimming. The phrases below are all things coaches have heard before, and we just cringe when we hear them. Each is an example of what not to say to your swimmer.

1. Introducing your child to someone as "the swimmer." "This is Johnny, the swimmer." Swimming is something your child does, not who they are. Help your child cultivate their identity as a person, and encourage them to be the best they can be at swimming. Ultimately, they will better be able to weather the storms of failure and enjoy the fruits of success in swimming if their identity is not wrapped around it.

2. "We came all this way/spent all this money/took all this time... and you swam slow/didn't try/performed poorly." Your kid is probably already disappointed in their own performance, without adding the weight of your parental sacrifices. Understand that it is the nature of human performance that your child will not perform at his or her best at every meet or in every race. The effect of making this comment is that the next time you make a sacrifice to go to a meet, your child will feel the added pressure - possibly to the detriment of his performance.

3. "Good job" (When your child doesn't perform well). They knows when it was a good swim and when it was a bad one. False praise does nothing but cheapen the praise when it is actually deserved. Try "good effort" or "you'll get 'em next time" or "I love you anyway."

4. "WE need to get this cut, WE need to win this event, etc." How many lengths of the pool are you swimming, mom? It is your child's swim, not yours, and you should try to promote their ownership of his performance. Be their biggest fan--there to support them through good and bad--not their teammate.

5. "It's probably your training" (reason why you swam slow). As a parent, it is important that you buttress your child's confidence in their coach. If you have concerns about your swimmer's progress, address them with the coach. Passing your concern on to your swimmer is likely to weaken the coach-swimmer partnership.

6. "It's okay, you don't have to go to practice today." This one comes up when your child is tired, cranky, or is just not wanting to go to practice. It is going to happen at some point that your age grouper will have one of these days. But rather than act as enabler by caving to your swimmer's desire not to attend practice, remind them that it their swimming and their results at the end of the season that will be affected. Remind them of the commitment they has made to their team and to their own swimming. The key is to get your child to make the decision, rather than having you the parent act as the passive enabler. It's tough -- you may not want to take them to practice either, but taking this approach consistently will help your child take ownership of their performance.

Parents, any questions about effective ways to talk swimming with your kid?  Let your coach know, and let's get the lines of communication open and flowing!

Fundraising Through Fitness – Thursday, June 30th at Eisenhower Pool

This year’s Fundraising Through Fitness event will take place on Thursday, June 30th at Eisenhower Pool.  We will start activities at 5:30 pm for all practice groups and will have treats for all the swimmers when they finish.  Everyone should have received an email at the beginning of the month describing this event.  I have included it below for your reference.

In 2020, rather than having our customary Swim-A-Thon fundraiser, we created a new event called  Fundraising Through Fitness ! This event was a rousing success and really sparked our team members into action with the goal of assisting our swim club. We are planning some fun activities and cool prizes around this event for the kids, so we hope to see you all there!

While the COVID-19 pandemic is hopefully moving towards its conclusion, it’s impact still has a lingering effect on the Academy Bullets Swim Club. Due to our inability to host traditional meets, decreased membership numbers due to facility limitations, and increased pool rent, we have made some very hard decisions over the past 12 months - such as cutting pay for our coaching staff - to keep kids in the pool and offer as much programming as possible to our membership.

The  Fundraising Through Fitness  event will be held the last week of June after the Nashville Summer Sizzler. The exact date depends on each individual site and will be posted in the next few days on your site calendar.  Fundraising Through Fitness  is like a walk-a-thon where swimmers collect pledges for doing a certain number of rounds of their dryland exercises in a given time period.

FAQ’s-
How do supporters pledge?    Donations can be made online starting June 8, 2021 (there is a $3.95 online processing charge) or can be given to you via cash/check payable to Academy Bullets Swim Club.

Each swimmer can set up an online profile for our  Fundraising Through Fitness  event and send emails from their page.  In the next few days, you will receive additional emails with instructions on how to set up your swimmer’s online profile. There are two ways for people to support you:

1.    Pledge a certain amount each round completed.

2.    Pledge a flat amount regardless of how many rounds the athlete completes (recommended).

What are the Prizes?     There will a prize for every swimmer who participates in  Fundraising Through Fitness . There will be additional prizes from the Academy Bullets Swim Club for swimmers who collect a higher level of pledges.  These prizes can be found below:

Speedo Capital City Classic Meet - Wrap-up

Thank you so much for all of your efforts in making this past weekend’s Speedo Capital City Classic such a success!  Your incredible efforts allowed us to host a wonderful meet for all the swimmers and their families.  An especially big shout out goes to those team members that worked every session of the meet – you were incredible!

The coaches are so proud of how all of our Springfield Bullets performed over the weekend.  Our kids were awesome, and their hard work is showing in their incredible improvements.

I also want to mention how our Chicago Bullets’ coaches told me several times throughout the weekend how impressed they are with with the team culture and spirit we have at our Springfield site. This is something we work very hard to cultivate here and it is a testament to the wonderful swimmers and families we have here.

Again, thank you so much for everyone’s efforts this past weekend.  Together we are a much stronger team and can accomplish incredible things.  I hope everyone has a wonderful day,

Water Slide Practice - Friday, June 17

On Friday, June 17 we will have a special water slide practice at Nelson Center. Swimmers will be allowed to use the water slide the last 15 minutes of their scheduled practice time. Be sure to attend practice on Friday - This was a huge hit when we did this a couple weeks ago,

Special Starts and Turns Practice - Saturday, June 18 at Eisenhower Pool

We are running a special starts and turns practice on Saturday, June 18 at Eisenhower Pool. We hope our swimmers will take advantage of this great opportunity, The schedule is as follows:

  • IncrediBullets – 9:15-10:00 am at Eisenhower - Starts and Turns practice

  • Bronze – 9:00-10:00 am at Eisenhower - Starts and Turns practice last 45 minutes of practice

  • Silver I – 8:45-10:00 am at Eisenhower - Starts and Turns practice last 45 minutes of practice

  • Silver II - 8:00-10:00 am at Eisenhower - Starts and Turns practice last 30 minutes of practice

  • Gold - 8:00-10:00 am at Eisenhower - Starts and Turns practice last 30 minutes of practice

Stay Hydrated - Bring Water Bottles to Practice

It is always important for our swimmers to stay hydrated but I want to remind everyone of the urgent importance during the heat we are currently experiencing. All swimmers should be bringing water bottles to practice each day filled with cold water. Please put your name on the water bottle so it is easily identified by your swimmer. Also, no sharing of water between swimmers as we don’t want to share any potential sicknesses.

USA Swimming Announces 2024 Olympic Trials Qualifying Standards – Meet to be Held June 15-23 in Indianapolis

USA Swimming has releases the qualifying standards (and dates) for the 2024 U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials. The event will take place from June 15-23 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana in a new 9-day format…

“Having our Olympic Trials dates and time standards available to our swimmers is a big step towards Indianapolis and Paris 2024,” U.S. National Team Managing Director Lindsay Mintenko said. “The drops in time from the 2020 Trials Time Standards are a sign that our sport is continuing to get faster across all events and disciplines. Speedo Spring Fling Meet – Recap

Wow.. what a fantastic meet!  Congratulations to all of our swimmers on doing such an incredible job all weekend at our Speedo Spring Fling meet.

There are moments I call “aha” moments where as a coach I can see positive changes in our swimmers and team… This weekend was one of them.  We had so many great swims at this meet and the coaches are beyond thrilled.  Besides the many best times we saw fantastic leaps in our swimmers’ understanding of how to race, how to swim events, how to do their start, turns finishes etc.  We feel a great positive momentum  building and are excited about the future.

On top of the fantastic performances by our swimmers our parents once again proved they are the best!  Thank you so much for all your work and efforts to running another incredible meet that swimmers, teams, and families love to attend!  My appreciation for your efforts cannot be expressed enough.  It is the truest example of “Stronger Together” that is the theme of our site.

I am so thankful for all of you and thrilled to have you on our team.   The future of our program looks bright. Thank you once again for all you help and as all ways… Let’s Go Bullets!

The process is simple. Sign into your account on our team web site and click on the Events/Meet tab. From there, click the
meet you desire and select the Attend/Decline button. You will be brought to a webpage on our team website that will allow you to commit or not commit your child to the meet. If you have more than one child swimming you will see them listed on this page.

Here are the steps if you ARE NOT GOING

  • Click on the Member Names [they default to Not Committed]

  • Then click on the Signup Record pull-down and select No

  • If No, just click on the [Save Changes] button to save the changes

  • If you have more than one child, repeat the same task as listed above

Here are the steps if you ARE GOING:

  • Click on the Signup Record pull-down and select Yes

  • Once yes is selected, you will see the sessions that are available for this meet. You are signing up by Days only.

  • Check the Checkbox to the left of the name for those Sessions you would like/can swim

  • Once you have finished, click on the Submit Button in the lower right

  • Repeat the process for additional swimmers

It is that simple. Once the entry deadline passes, the coaches will select the swimmers events and we will send an email out to families letting them know that entries have been posted and how to proceed. Swimmers and families will not be able to select events for the meet. The coaching staff picks events for the athletes for all meets we attend. If you have questions about your swimmer's events after the entries are posted, you will need to speak to your group coach.

Again, he highly encourage all of our Springfield Bullets swimmers to participate in this meet.

Great Read - How to Help Young Athletes Learn From Mistakes - By Patrick Cohn, Ph.D. and Lisa Cohn

From the baseball field to the tennis court, mistakes are a natural part of sports. Whether your kid drops the game-winning pass, double-faults their serve at match point, or misses a short putt on the final hole, mistakes will happen.

As parents, we can't prevent our kids from making mistakes, but we can teach them how to deal with their disappointments and learn from their experiences. With mistakes and adversity, some negative emotions will naturally occur. But often these emotions can cause athletes to stay stuck in a past performance, which can undermine their confidence.
