7 Reasons Every Swimmer Should Go to Swim Meets by Olivier Poirier-Leroy

Swim meets are a little unforgiving when viewed in a certain manner. You spend months training a countless number of hours, only to have your performance completed in a manner of minutes, with no recourse if you disagree with the numbers on the scoreboard.

But on the other hand, they are also places where swimmers learn the value of hard work, of setting and chasing goals, and other life skills including dealing with setbacks, developing sportsmanship, to even just broing down with your fellow swimmers.

Here are 7 reasons every swimmer should go to swim meets: READ MORE HERE

Bring a Friend/Family Member to Practice Day - Sunday, April 10

Do you have a friend or family member that might be interested in joining our team? Are they unsure about what we are we do or if our team and sport fit for them? We have the perfect solution…Invite them to one of our practices.. Specifically to our newest special event - Bring a Friend/Family Member to Practice Day this Sunday, April 10 at Eisenhower Pool. We introduce your friends and family members to freestyle and backstroke along with play some fun games.

  • Who is invited? Anyone that might be interested in our sport and team. Only prerequisites are that they are comfortable with being in the water. They do not have to be experienced… just comfortable.

  • Time - 11:00-12:00 noon

    • Note - the Gold and Silver II groups will have practice from 9:30-11:00 am beforehand

  • New swimmers should bring one parent and/or guardian with them.

  • We will have special food and drink treats after “practice time”.

  • This is a new activity for us so we do not have any steadfast rules.. we want everyone to bring a friend and have a fun and exciting day!

  • Questions - ask Coach Jeff at the pool or by email at j.skeels@academybullets.com

Lengthening Your Strokes Equals Faster Times

by Amy Padilla and USA Swimming

There is a common misconception that longer strokes are only for distance swimmers. The truth is, the longer your strokes are, the less numbers of strokes you need to take to get to the wall, regardless of whether it is a sprint or long distance event. Accomplishing this feat, however, takes time and practice but is well worth the effort. READ MORE HERE

Great Read - The Stopwatch Doesn’t Lie But It Also Doesn’t Tell The Full Story

Below is an excellent article by Coach Paul Yetter of the North Baltimore Aquatic Club.

The stopwatch doesn’t lie, but it also doesn’t tell the full story.

Athletes can improve over time without going “best times” each time they compete! From my perspective as a coach of athletes age 14-19, I look for a few times per year when we go for strong progression on the “best times”.  But we race almost every month!

A team full of High School-aged athletes are not going PRs every month for 48 straight months.

Adults (coaches and parents) have to let these kids know that they can continue to get better and make game-changing improvement — without the achievement of Personal Best Times” every time out.

That way when the athlete “puts it all together” they get big progress.  It may seem at the moment of victory that the progress has happened all at once, but really the progress has been happening the whole time, just not seen clearly.
